The Umatilla County jail is run by the Sheriff’s department in that county. The facility has over two hundred and fifty beds for inmates. The Umatilla County jail is a recently built facility that offers inmates many programs to better their quality of life.

There are around seven hundred thousand residents in Multnomah County and all of them are served by the counties sheriff officers. The sheriff’s office handles 911 emergencies and makes arrests of individuals that have been found to be violating the law. 
Those that are arrested by the sheriff’s officers are then brought to the county jail for processing until they face charges and are found guilty or innocent of those charges.
The sheriff in Multnomah County is elected by popular vote and is expected to oversee all of the sheriff’s officers in the county. The duty of sheriff’s officers sometimes extends past that which is expected of local officers.

The Marion county jail enforces the punishments handed out by the county court system. In addition to punishment however, the county jail offers inmates a variety of services.
The Marion county jail inmates are offered medical and dental care, so that they can attend to their health needs. There is always a nursing staff available to help if an inmate should become ill or injured.
In addition, the Marion county jail offers educational services to Marion county jail inmates that wish to further their education. Regardless of the level of schooling completed before becoming an inmate, there will be classes available to suit each individual’s educational needs. If an inmate experiences difficulty in learning, they will also be offered a tutor to help them complete their studies.

The Lane county Sheriff states that his mission is to ,” serve as the premier law enforcement and correction agency in the State of Oregon and lead Lane county’s law enforcement and criminal justice efforts.”  The Sheriff’s officers are expected to provide emergency services and investigate crimes that occur in that county. In addition, they are expected to arrest those accused of the crimes and remand them to the Lane county jail.
The Lane county jail had five hundred and seven beds. There are also one hundred and twenty two beds which are utilized in the work release programs at the Lane county jail. Some inmates do not receive jail time but are instead part of the work release program, community service or the Sheriff’s work crew. The type of offense and number of offenses will determine which program and individual is a part of.
The probation program works in concert with the Lane county jail. There are generally over three thousand individuals on probation and those that break probationary rules, often return to the Lane county jail.
Like every county jail, the main purpose of incarceration is punishment. However, there is also a focus on rehabilitation and basic life skills so that inmates are less likely to re-offend.

The Cook County jail is considered to be one of the largest pre-detention facilities in the United States. At any given time, the Cook County jail houses over 9,000 inmates, there over 3,000 law enforcement officers and approximately 7,000 civilian employees. The area of the jail itself is situated on 96 acres of land.
Primarily Cook County jail inmates are made up of men and women who are awaiting their respective trial times. Within the Cook county jail, the department of corrections is broken down into 11 different units; each one of these units is headed by their own official/superintendent. As for the halls of the jail, there have been several infamous individuals who have been placed there, individuals such as: Al Capone, Jeff Fort, Tony Accardo, and John Wayne Gacy.
Throughout history, the Cook County jail has been known for being one of a few jails within Illinois that has done executions via the electric chair. This practice was done for many years in the Cook County jail, but was put to an end in 1962.
Because it is such a large facility and houses a surplus of inmates, there have been allegations made against the jail and how it functions. Cook County jail inmates have been questioned about the quality of treatment they receive and whether or not it’s fair; the government has stepped in to help re-evaluate the facility and boost the standards.
In popular culture, the Cook County jail has been used as a musical recording venue, and has been depicted in the musical Chicago.

However, these calls have to be monitored, in order to track illegal activity. The Kane county jail also provides options for work-details, in order to keep the detainees working and active. There are also spiritual meetings and groups that can be used by the inmates, for their own spiritual needs.
