Sac County Jail is run by the Sacrament County Sheriff’s Department. It is near the Downtown Plaza in down town Sacramento. In order to minimize some of the costs associated with keeping inmates in the Sacramento county jail have been attempted to be reduced through a variety of methods. 
The first cost cutting method practiced by the Sac County Jail System was to close two alternative sites, and consolidate the inmate population in a single building, the main facility at the Sacramento County Jail building.
When closing the satellite facilities in the Sac County Jail System were insufficient to effect the desired budgetary savings, then the Sacramento County Jail System sought to determine if any of the inmates that were still being housed in the Sacramento County Jail System would be eligible for parole or for alternative methods of imprisonment.

The mission statement of the Jackson Sheriff’s department states that they will, “protect the community by maintaining the safety, security, order, discipline and Constitutional rights of incarcerated persons in the correctional facility. ” The sheriff’s officers do arrest people when they are believed to have broken the law, but they are also there to protect the rights of individuals that are incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.
The Jackson county jail generally holds around two hundred and fifty Male and female inmates, on offenses that do necessitate state or federal charges.
The inmates take care of the laundry and cooking in the facility but they are governed by civilian employees and officers that work in the jail. By having inmates participate in running the jail, such as cooking, inmates are exposed to responsibility. The Sheriff’s office has attempted various methods of collecting monies to help fund the sheriff’s department, as well as the Columbia county jail. For example, there are bed rentals available, which the US Marshall’s may rent. Those monies are used to help fund the jail.
The county residents are fiscally responsible for funding the operations at the Columbia county jail, as well as the sheriff’s department. There is also a separate facility within the Travis County Jail system, which houses those that are still in the process of being booked, or charged for crimes.
The Travis County Jail offers inmates health services which include basic services such as vaccinations and medications for those inmates which require it. There are also more advanced services, such as treatment of illness and injuries. There are some illnesses and communicable disease which are more likely to be found among the prison population. Staff at the Travis County Jail is very adept at watching for symptoms of those illnesses.
There are also counseling services available for inmates at the Travis County Jail. In addition to allowing inmates to confront issues such as alcohol abuse, counseling services can determine if there is a mental illness. For example, counseling services may discover that an inmate is bipolar and they can assist inmates with handling the disease. Counseling would likely include medication, when required, as well as individualized and group therapy sessions.

The Lane county jail had five hundred and seven beds. There are also one hundred and twenty two beds which are utilized in the work release programs at the Lane county jail. Some inmates do not receive jail time but are instead part of the work release program, community service or the Sheriff’s work crew. The type of offense and number of offenses will determine which program and individual is a part of.
The probation program works in concert with the Lane county jail. There are generally over three thousand individuals on probation and those that break probationary rules, often return to the Lane county jail.
Like every county jail, the main purpose of incarceration is punishment. However, there is also a focus on rehabilitation and basic life skills so that inmates are less likely to re-offend.
